The interstate’s jammed with gunners like me afraid of comin’ in last

I’ve added a new subcategory to the Music category called “Themes.”  As I was listening to music the other day at work, I realized a lot of my favorite songs have a similar subject, theme or characteristic.  So I thought I would post some of these and you can suggest songs for me to try or give me ideas for other themes.  In case I haven’t mentioned it before, I love comments. :-)

Today’s theme is driving. I love any song that talks about driving or going somewhere. It’s probably because I love to drive especially since I got the coolest car ever.  I have always wanted to just get in my car and drive until I run out of gas, fill up and then come back. Until I do that, I’ll just settle for taking the long way home.

So this post’s title is a line in one of my driving songs.  It is “Days Go By” by Keith Urban. Click More to see my list and some of my favorite lyrics for each song.

  • Christina Aguilera – Cruz
“As I’m driving, I’m captured by the view; So much beauty, the road becomes my muse; The heat is rising, and my hand surfs through the wind; Cool, calm, collective as a child that lies within”
  • Barenaked Ladies – Go Home
“If you think of her as joan of arc; Shes burning for you, get your car out of park; If you think of her as catherine the great; Then you should be the horse to help her meet her fate; If you need her, you should be there, go home”
  • Dierks Bentley – Settle for a Slowdown
“But your wheels just turn down the road ahead; if it hurts at all, you ain’t showed it yet; you’re just a tiny dot on that horizon line; come on tap those brakes baby just one time; I know there’s nothing stopping you now… but I’d settle for a slowdown”
  • Kenny Chesney – What I need to do
“This old highway seems to understand; Leadin me on to somewhere no one knows my name; I got the window rolled down; I got the radio up; I’m doin all I can to get my mind off us”
  • Kelly Clarkson – Go (Ford commercial)
“Let’s Go; Let’s Jump Right In; Screamin’ To the Wind; Feel The Fire Within; I Can’t Ignore This Burnin’ In My Soul; C’mon Baby, Let’s Go”
  • Matchbox Twenty – Rest Stop
“Just three miles from the rest stop; And my mouths too dry to rage; The light was shining from the radio; I could barely see her face; But she knew all the words that I never had said; She knew the crumpled-up promise of this; Broken down man – and as I opened up the door”
  • George Strait – Run
“Find a truck and fire it up; Lean on the gas and off the clutch; Leave dallas in the dust; I need you in a rush; So baby run”
  • Keith Urban – Days Go By
“And the days go by…; I can feel ‘em flyin’; Like a hand out the window as the cars go by…”
  • Keith Urban – Who Wouldn’t Wanna Be Me
“And the sun is shinin’; This road keeps windin’; Through the prettiest country; From Georgia to Tennessee; And I got the one I love beside me; My troubles behind me; I’m alive and I’m free; Who wouldn’t wanna be me”

That’s my list so far.  If I think of any more, I’ll add them.

I’ve got some suggestions: Rascal Flatts – Fast Cars & Freedom. Not so much a driving song as a car song…but I like it. Some suggestions from Lance: Kenny Chesney – How Forever Feels and Lonestar – How about Now. That song always makes me want to go on a road trip. You have two of my favorites already on your list, What I need to do, and Rest Stop.

Another one of my favorites…Mud on the Tires – Brad Paisley. We wore that CD out on the way to Bristol a few years ago. Anytime I listen to it, I think “Road Trip!” Lance also adds What Was I Thinkin’ by Dierks.

Thanks Sherry & Lance! Those are all songs I have, but didn’t think about them. I thought of 2 more this weekend: “Georgia” by Carolyn Dawn Johnson and “Speed” by Montgomery Gentry.

When I think of driving songs only one song comes to mind. It doesn’t have any lyrics but if you need to get somewhere fast – this is what you listen too.

Chemical Brothers – Leave Home (Underworld Mix One)

    Believe me it works.

    Onto driving song #2:
Chuck Berry – No Particualr Place To Go

We all know how this one goes:
    “Riding along in my automobile
My baby beside me at the wheel
I stole a kiss at the turn of a mile
    my curiosity running wild
    crusin’ and playin’ the radio
with no particular place to go”

    Driving Song #3:
De La Soul & Tom Petty – Fallin’

This is an ultimate cruising song. Windows down, wind through your hair, and your arm handing out the window… maybe your hand is even surfing the wind… who knows…

:) Thats it for now. (All these are found in the Online-file…)

King of the Road – Roger Miller
